Academic Advising

You and Your Advisor

Your advisor is your most important connection to your college education. He or she can help you plan your academic career and serve as a resource to connect you to a wide array of services on campus.
  • At Northwest you are assigned a full-time faculty/staff member as your advisor.
  • Your advisor will be selected based upon the academic interest you have selected.
  • You will either receive notice of your advisor assignment and their contact information in the mail or you may pick up contact information for your advisor in the Academic Affairs office.
  • You may change advisors at any time by submitting a Change of Advisor form to the Academic Affairs Office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to see your advisor before registering for classes?
No, but it is strongly recommended. Advisors are highly trained in their fields and can often save students time and money through the best advice on course selection.

Can I change advisors if I don't work well with my current advisor?
Yes. Northwest is committed to finding you an advisor who works best for you. Changing advisors is a simple process of completing a form and turning in to the Academic Affairs Office.

If advisors are supposed to know the requirements, why should I read the catalog?
Advisors give advice, but the ultimate responsibility for your academic career is yours. It is important for you to understand the catalog requirements. Visit our College Catalog section to access the catalog online.

I am transferring, where can I get a catalog for Anywhere University?
Access to CollegeSource Online is available through the Transfer Information or Hinckley Library sections of our Web site. This program provides online catalogs for virtually all institutions in the United States.
