Northwest College (NWC) and Indiana University (IU) announce their fourth cooperative program in archaeological field methods scheduled from May 26, 2008 to July 2, 2008. NWC and IU present a holistic, field-based program in the social history and human ecology of the northwestern High Plains and Middle Rocky Mountains with a special emphasis on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This program examines the changing material culture of Crow and Shoshone Indians during the transition from Pre-Contact Period nomadic hunting and gathering societies to a contemporary Reservation-based ranching culture. Fieldwork includes a combined program of remote sensing, total station and global positioning system (GPS) mapping, artifact analysis, and limited test excavations at sites in northwestern Wyoming and southern Montana. Admission is by application only. Application deadline for Indiana University students is March 7, 2008. Northwest College and other students may apply until May 26, 2008. CREDITS AVAILABLE: 2-8, Summer 2008 Students receive 2 credit hours for each ten-day session. DATES OF PROGRAM: Session 1 (Bighorn Canyon) — May 26 to June 4, 2008 EXCAVATION FEES: $85/credit hour Fees cover transportation and meals while at the site. Northwest College provides food, kitchen facilities and equipment; all students will share in regular camp duties (cooking, etc.). On-site camping will be under 'primitive' conditions. Participants will need to provide their own personal camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, pad) and be prepared for 10 days of field living. Some equipment may be borrowed from Northwest College Outdoor Education and Recreation Program (307-754-6250). Wyoming summer nights can be quite cold, and snow in June is not uncommon.TRANSPORTATION: All transportation during field school sessions is provided. Students are responsible for transportation to Lovell, Wyoming and return, and for their living expenses between field sessions. Participants may bring a personal vehicle for travel to and from the camp site and other destinations. Travel from the camp site to the excavation site will be provided by college vehicles. EQUIPMENT: All excavation and lab equipment will be supplied by the field school. INSURANCE: Participants are responsible for their own insurance coverage.
