Farrier Program
NORTHWEST COLLEGE’S EQUINE STUDIES HAS THREE FARRIER OPTIONS FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE, whether your goal is learning to properly care for the feet of your own horse, working as a professional farrier, or operating your own business:
The three farrier options can also fit together. Starting with the Horse Owner Hoof Care certificate, you may then add more classes to achieve the Farrier Certificate. Finally, if you choose to add classes in business and general education, you will achieve your AAS in Farrier Business Management.
Farrier classes are held in the evening and two afternoons a week, so you can attend clases while working an outside job. The lab classes are small in size (eight students maximum); you will have plenty of opportunity to work on your skills and get assistance when needed.
Tools are provided for the student to use during class times. The only tool you will need to purchase is a shoeing rasp. We have gas forges for you to utilize during class for shaping shoes and for the blacksmith classes. Horses are provided for students' ample hands-on. There is also time outside of class to practice your forge work skills.
