NWC Guide for Parents

Welcome

The material provided in this web site is designed to help parents provide good advice for their students.  It is divided into six major sections:

  • Quick Links is a collection of links organized specifically with parents in mind.
  • Degrees and majors explains the degrees offered at Northwest Taking Classes discusses the mechanics of choosing and registering for classes
  • Transferring outlines the process of transferring NWC courses to another institution
  • Policies and procedures points out some of the more important policies at Northwest
  • College life discusses various aspects of life in a college community

Over the last several decades parents have become increasingly involved with their children’s college educations.  It was not all that long ago that students would head off to college and, after they settled into the routine of college life, only touch base with their parents with a weekly phone call on Sunday evenings.

That model of college life is long gone.  Now, with email and cell phones and text messaging, students tend to stay in much closer contact with their parents.  As college costs increase and a college education becomes even more necessary for professional success, parents are increasingly concerned about ensuring that their students’ have a positive and effective college experience.

The College Board points out that balance is the key for parents as they work to support their students.  They note, “As you strive to maintain a healthy balance, try thinking of yourself as a coach. You're there to provide structure, give advice, and serve as a role model, but it's your child who needs to step up to the plate.”

We agree. Our hope is that the material in this Guide will help parents provide their students with effective coaching and support.
