Over the years, many studies have been conducted to see what characteristics, if any, successful students shared. While there is some variation from study to study, several traits surface repeatedly:
- Desire and motivation
- A real connection with someone or something at the college
Any number of things can put students at a disadvantage: a weak high school background, inadequate skills, poor health, or a low income level. All of these will be trumped by a student's desire and motivation.
Parents should encourage their students to find a subject or area they enjoy. A specific goal is a great advantage for students. Encourage your students to visit with instructors. NWC faculty work at Northwest because the enjoy teaching and working with students. They are happy to visit with them. Encourage your students to become involved with the college outside of the classroom. Clubs and organizations, as well as on campus employment, are excellent ways for students to be involved with the campus community.
Studies have indicated that this type of involvement increases a student's sense of control, and that in turn increases the student's satisfaction with life in general. Parental and family support can be enormously helpful in making this happen.
