Here are some suggestions for smoothing the process of transferring to another institution. Students should
- Start planning to transfer during their freshman year.
- Research colleges and universities
- Select a transfer college or university, ideally early in the sophomore year.
- Review the college's catalog and admission materials. The catalog will be available at College Source Online.
- Pay attention to deadlines. Many schools have specific deadlines for admission, housing, and financial aid, so start early.
- Select NWC classes which match the requirements of the transfer institution AND requirements for NWC graduation. (An advisor can help with this.)
- Check for specific requirements at your transfer institution. Some schools have criteria which must be met before a student can take junior level courses or enter specific programs. For example, a student may need to have a certain GPA, a specific series of courses, or 60 credits completed.
- Apply for admission. This can be time consuming, especially if the student is applying to more than one college. In addition to an application, students may be asked to write an essay, provide a portfolio of recent work, or send letters of reference.
- Send a copy of your NWC transcript. This may be necessary as part of the application. Even if it is not required, send a copy of the transcript for evaluation by the transfer institution.
- Contact the financial aid office at the transfer institution. The Financial Aid office at NWC can also help to ensure that a student's financial aid will continue.
- Arrange for housing early. Many college towns have housing shortages, so it is wise to arrange for housing as soon as possible. Submit applications for residence halls to have more options for housing. Most colleges offer special living options for upperclassmen, including single rooms.
- Remember to have a copy of the transcript sent after the student has finished his or her last semester at Northwest
