Meeteetse officially became a community in 1896, although a post office was located on Otto Franc's nearby Pitchfork Ranch as early as 1881.
Meeteetse is a Shoshone word meaning "meeting place."
A colony of Black Footed ferrets, previously thought to be extinct, was discovered near Meeteetse in 1981 when a rancher discovered a dog with a dead ferret.
When an outbreak of canine distemper threatened the ferret colony in 1987, the ferrets were captured and placed in a captive breeding program near Laramie. Lucille's Cafe in Meeteetse sold T-shirts picturing a defiant ferret, clenched fist raised in the air, over the slogan of "Live Free or Die."
Amelia Earhart was building a cabin near Meeteetse when she disappeared on her famous last flight.
