Harriet Bloom-Wilson
Director of International Programs; Assistant Professor in Humanities
I was born and grew up in New York City, so Wyoming and the small town of Powell were foreign to me, too, when my husband and I first moved here to teach in January, 1981. Now, 30+ years later, I guess you could call me a Westerner with Eastern roots.
My husband, a retired professor of Humanities, and I have two daughters who share our love of travel and languages. Besides moving around the U.S., I have lived in Canada, Switzerland, and France but my travels have taken me all over Europe and Asia and to Russia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and India, as well.
Working with the international students as a teacher, advisor, and recruiter gives me great pleasure. When you arrive in Wyoming, I will greet you and help you plan your course of study and you’ll find my door open to you when you want to visit or need to talk.
I am sure when you come here you will learn why Northwest College holds a special place in the hearts of so many people around the world and why they continue to think of Powell, Wyoming, as their "home away from home."
Mary Baumann
Multicultural Program Coordinator
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Native American Studies from Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. I have taught in rural and urban schools in the United States, Iceland, and Germany, and I've traveled extensively around the world. At Northwest College, I have a job that includes many different students on campus. Besides advising most of the Native American students, I am an advocate for international students. If you are interested in applying for admission to Northwest College, I am one of the first persons with whom you will communicate. I help you with any questions that you might have concerning your student visa, with details about admission to the College; I also help make arrangements to pick you up at the airport when you arrive.
One of the joys of my job is helping students have a good experience while attending Northwest College. I enjoy all of the different cultures that are represented by our students. I am looking forward to meeting you and assisting you while you are here.
Amanda Enriquez
International Programming Assistant/ International Club Co-Adviser
I was born in Zurich, Switzerland, but grew up in Santiago de Chile, where I spent 10 years of my childhood. In 2000, my family moved to New Jersey before coming to Cody, Wyoming, in 2002. After high school, I attended NWC for three years where I graduated with dual degrees in English Literary Studies and English Writing. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Hawaii Pacific University. Currently, I am pursuing my Masters in Adult and Post-Secondary Education from the University of Wyoming. I love to travel and I call Cody and Powell my home.
At Northwest College, I work alongside Madame Harriet Bloom-Wilson and Mrs. Mary Baumann and assist them with their daily work. I am also a co-adviser to the NWC International Club. One of my favorite parts of this job is planning and taking international students on weekend trips to go shopping, skiing, bowling, and to get to know the surrounding area including Yellowstone National Park. I love getting to know students from all over the world and every day brings something new and exciting. In the future, I hope to continue and to further my career as an international educator.
Milo Asay
Instructor of English as a Second Language (ESL)/International Club Co-Adviser
I’m the ESL instructor, and have been teaching at NWC for two years. The ESL courses are for non-native speakers of English preparing to study in an academic English-speaking environment at the college or university level. Also, I assist with the International Club; this is where you can receive support to socialize, expand your cultural awareness, and share your culture with other students and the community. Before coming to NWC, I taught English in Japan and Saudi Arabia for 19 years, so I know what it is like to live overseas and to receive support and help from others in similar situations. As an extra class, I also teach yoga. I have studied yoga for 19 years and have taught for 11 years. I look forward to having you in my classes, either ESL or yoga.
Deepthi Amarasuriya
Instructor of Physics/ International Club Co-Adviser
I am the Physics instructor and NWC and I also teach Math. I am originally from Sri Lanka and came to the USA to attend Purdue University in Indiana. After getting my undergrad degree in Physics, I went on to get graduate degrees in Physics and Math from Idaho State University and the University of Wyoming. Because of my experiences as foreign student in the United States, I like to work with international students and to get involved with cultural activities on campus. In my spare time I enjoy playing the piano. I studied with a piano teacher in Sri Lanka and also with a concert pianist at Idaho State University. I enjoy traveling in the Rocky Mountain states.
Rosemary Reno
Chairperson, NWC International Friendship Family Committee
My name is Rosemary Reno and I was born in Chillicothe, Ohio. I have attended Marin Junior College in San Rafael, California, Santa Rosa Junior College, Glendale College, and LA City College, taking courses that were basically of interest to me. After divorcing, I moved to Japan for a year and lived in a Japanese community as a tourist.
My work background included considerable years as a secretary. I was secretary to the Adjutant General of Oklahoma, and personal secretary to the President/Chairman of the Board of United Recording in Hollywood, CA. This was a fantastic experience, meeting numerous stars and being able to attend the Grammys and Academy Awards. I worked as Project Coordinator for a recreational land development company out of Glendale, CA. After obtaining a California real estate sales license I sold Real Estate in San Diego County and then accepted an offer to sell real estate in Mexico.
I have always delighted in experiencing new things and have traveled extensively whenever and where ever I could. Over the years I have traveled numerous times in Europe, Asia, to five countries in South America, to the South Seas, Iceland, the Middle East, and Africa. I moved to Powell, WY, in October of 2004, to be near my daughter and my 2 beautiful granddaughters. I am the Financial Coordinator for the Women's Connection in Powell; on the Board of Directors and Treasurer for the Powell Rotary Club; on the Board of Directors and Concert Artist Coordinator for the Live Community Concert Association in Park County; and last, but not least, Chairperson for the International Friendship Committee at NWC.
Of all the organizations in which I have an involvement, the Friendship Committee truly tugs at my heart strings. I can't imagine a more pleasurable endeavor than being associated with the outstanding young people from so many different countries. Providing friendship families for them is a teaching process for both the families and students as they learn about the cultures, foods, religions and geography relative to one another. Working with Harriet Bloom-Wilson, Mary Baumann and Amanda Enriquez has been a delightful experience in itself. I am proud to say I share a small part in their accomplishments.
