Leonardo Medeiros and Cheyenne Saltsman were named the athletes of the year for Northwest College on Monday night at the school’s annual athletic awards ceremony. The dinner and program was held at The Commons in downtown Powell.

Postseason changes coming
The National Junior College Athletic Association approved changes to the postseason tournament structure in both basketball and soccer. The changes were announced following the organization’s spring board of directors meeting in Colorado Springs.

Short stay for Trapper basketball
The Region IX men’s and women’s basketball tournaments came to an unceremonious end for the Northwest College Trappers as both teams were defeated in their opening contests. The men fell by a 67-63 count to North Platte. The Trapper women lost 87-45 to Northeastern.

Trapper women open against Northeastern
The Northwest College women’s basketball team will begin the Region IX tournament in the same fashion it began last season — staring across the court at Northeastern Junior College. The teams, which played multiple times last season, managed to avoid a regular season encounter this year.

The Northwest College Trappers took a few steps forward and then a few steps back in action on the hardwood last week, according to their coach. NWC fell by an 86-75 margin at No. 6 Casper last week before being tripped up at home 69-54 by Miles on Saturday.

Trapper women explode for 114 points
After battling through some offensive struggles in its previous two games, the Northwest College women’s basketball team broke out of its shell in a big way last week. The Trapper women scored 114 points — their highest offensive output since March 6, 2004 — in a 114-51 win over Little Big Horn.

It wasn’t hard to pinpoint the problem in Northwest College’s pair of women’s basketball losses last weekend. Slow starts cost the team dearly in losses to Central Wyoming and Sheridan College.

The Northwest College Trappers snapped a four-game skid in women’s basketball with a 54-44 win at Dawson Community College last Thursday. The win came one night after the team fell by a 78-68 count at Gillette College.

Rough week for Northwest Trapper women
The Northwest College Trapper women’s basketball team slid to 10-9 this season after dropping a pair of Region IX North contests last week. Northwest fell 82-68 on the road at Miles Community College, then dropped a 77-54 decision to Western Wyoming at home on Saturday.
