Hathaway Scholarships

Questions & Answers

Q: Can I use a Hathaway Scholarship at an out-of-state school?

A: No. The intent of the scholarship is, in part, to encourage you to pursue your education in Wyoming with hopes that you'll consider a career here when you are done.

Q: What are remedial courses and does the Hathaway Scholarship pay for them?

A: Remedial courses are classes below college level and the course number is below 1000. For example, MATH-930 is Intermediate Algebra. The Hathaway Scholarship does not pay for remedial courses, and they do not count towards total credit enrollment status for the Hathaway Scholarship.

Q: What if I am going on a mission or am going in to the military?

A: You must begin using your Hathaway Scholarship no later than two academic years after you graduate from high school, or prior to the 21st birthday if you are home-schooled. Exceptions may be made for extended military service or religious service. A process for these exceptions is in place through the Wyoming Department of Education.

Q: I graduated prior to 2006. Do I qualify for Hathaway Scholarships?

A: Sorry. The legislation that established the scholarships indicates the scholarships begin with the graduating class of 2006. Students who completed high school in December 2005 are officially part of the class of 2006. These students do qualify beginning in fall 2006.

Q: I just received my GED. Do I qualify for Hathaway Scholarships?

A: The Hathaway Scholarship is only for people who graduated beginning in the year 2006, or for GED students who would have graduated with the 2006 class. You must have taken the GED test after April 1, 2006. You would not qualify if your graduating year would have been prior to 2006 even if you received your GED in 2006.

Q: I qualify, but am going to attend another Wyoming institution and transfer to NWC. How does the process work?

A: Students who receive a Hathaway Scholarship, use it at another Wyoming institution, then transfer to NWC will transfer their scholarship with them, subject to the continued eligibility requirements previously discussed. Students must request a transcript be sent by the institution attended to the institution to which they intend to transfer.

Q: Am I a Wyoming resident and can I get a Hathaway Scholarship?

A: To qualify for the Hathaway Scholarship, you must be considered a resident according to NWC residency policy. Students who graduate from a Wyoming high school and/or whose parents live in Wyoming are residents. If this doesn't describe you, but you feel you may be a resident, please contact the NWC Admissions Office at 307.754.6101; toll-free 800.560.4692, or at admissions@northwestcollege.edu .

Q: I took the SAT and not the ACT, can I be considered?

A: Your SAT score can be converted to an ACT equivalent for consideration.

Q: I have a special situation and don't see that this web site addresses them. What do I do?

A: Call the NWC Hathaway Coordinator in the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office at 307.754.6270, (toll-free 800.560.4692), or email to scholarships@northwestcollege.edu , so we can discuss your situation.

Q: I heard there are plans to change the curriculum requirements necessary to receive the scholarship. Is that true?

A: Efforts are underway to determine a "success curricula" that will be required to receive a Hathaway Scholarship. However, this requirement will begin for the graduating class of 2011. The goal of the success curricula will be to encourage proper college preparatory coursework for Wyoming students. Information regarding this new requirement should be available in late 2007. Graduates from 2006 must meet the minimum requirements for high school graduation as established by the Wyoming Department of Education.
