Janis Beal — Women's Basketball Coach

Janis Beal enters her third season as the head coach of the Trappers.  The team finished with a 16-15 record last season placing 3rd in the Region IX North.  The success of the team landed one player on the Region IX All-Region Team and the WCCAC All-Conference 1st team, while another was honored as a member of the WCCAC All-Defensive Team. The Trappers continued their success in the classroom finishing in the top 10 of the WBCA team GPA for the second consecutive season, placing 7th.   Also, there were seven student-athletes named both WCCAC Academic All-Conference and Region IX Academic All-Region. 

Beal came to Northwest after coaching stops at Snow College in Ephraim, UT; Lovell High School in her hometown of Lovell, Wyoming; and Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.  While at Snow College during the 2008-2009 season she was responsible for recruiting, guard development, team travel, and other administrative duties.  The Badgers ended the season 3rd in the SWAC.  At the high school level from 2007-2008 the Lovell Bulldogs advanced to the state tournament by placing 2nd at the Regional Tournament and two players went on to play collegiate basketball.  She coached at Eastern Washington during the 2005-2007 seasons.  Eastern Washington is a member of the Division I Big Sky Conference.  While at Eastern she was in charge of guard development, team travel, facility scheduling, study table, and assisted in organizing Eagle basketball camps, and recruiting.  In 2006 the
Eagles ranked 3rd in the nation for team GPA among all NCAA Division I teams.

Prior to coaching she competed for Southern Utah University in Cedar City, UT.  SUU was then a member of the Mid-Continent Conference, but now competes in the Summit League.    During the 2003-2004 season she helped the T-Birds achieve the most wins in school history (18) and was selected to the Mid-Continent Conference All-Newcomer Team.  Beal was chosen as team captain her senior year and following the 2004-2005 season was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team and was also named Second Team All-Mid-Continent Conference.  Beal earned Mid-Continent Conference Player of the week honors during the 2004-2005 seasons.

Beal is no stranger to NJCAA basketball.  Her collegiate career began here at Northwest College.  While at Northwest she was an integral part of the team's 47-16 record from 2001-2003.  She ended her freshman season ranked 2nd nationally in the NJCAA poll for points per game averaging 23.6.  Both her freshmen and sophomore years she earned Region IX All-Region, All-Tournament Team, and Academic All-Conference Honors.  Following her sophomore year she was named the Wyoming Community College Athletic Conference (WCCAC) Player of the Year.   She also received Kodak All-American Honorable Mention and NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention honors for the 2002-2003 season.  Beal was a member of the 2003 NJCAA Academic National Championship Team.

Beal grew up in Lovell, Wyoming where she was a three-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball, track).  She was a member of 2 State Championship Teams: volleyball 1998 & basketball 2000.

Beal earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Southern Utah University in 2005 and then in 2008 completed a master's degree in Human Movement-Sport Conditioning from A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona.

Steve Coleman — Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

Steve enters his first season as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.  Originally from Texas, he attended UTEP for two years working on an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice.  While there he also participated on the men’s basketball team.  After college he served in the military for six years.  Steve received an honorable discharge and began working in law enforcement.  He then took a twelve year break to coach football, baseball, and girls’ basketball at the high school level in Utah.  While there he served in various positions from head coach to assistant coach.  Steve then moved to Wyoming to once again work in law enforcement, where he currently works for Big Horn County as a Deputy.  He has three daughters Briann, Aspyn, and Ciera and one son Tanner.
